What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the first and the lightest element in the periodic table in Chemistry.  It mainly occurs in the gaseous state. It is an insipid element which does not have taste, color and odor, but is highly flammable.

– Most of the matter in the universe whether planets etc. are mainly composed of hydrogen only.

– Water is a basic resource necessary for the survival of any form of life on earth and is made up of hydrogen and oxygen (H2O).

– Hydrogen is found in sugar, proteins, starch and fats which are important part of human diet.

Function of Hydrogen in the Human Body

– Hydrogen is an important component and source of water. Because of water, cells of the body remains hydrated and help in removing toxins from the body. Nutrients are also transported to the cells, joints remains lubricated and make immune system strong.

– Hydrogen helps in producing energy in the body. As, we know that human body uses energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine tri phosphate). We consume energy giving food like carbohydrates which is made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Enzymes present in our body helps in digestion of food and break down complex food in to simpler ones.

Is HYRDOGEN the new holy grail of anti-ageing?

Since the Eighties, the anti-ageing ingredient retinol (vitamin A) has been touted as the biggest boon for beauty. Yet famous dermatologist, Dr Perricone believes harnessing hydrogen is a far more efficacious way to wage war on wrinkles.

Hydrogen is the smallest and most basic molecule, representing more than 90 percent of the matter in the universe.  It’s widely tipped as the most promising source of “clean” fuel on Earth, and has now been bestowed with a skin-enhancing halo, thanks to its unrivaled anti-inflammatory properties.

Hydrogen’s healing history

Drinking and even bathing in hydrogen-infused water has long been an obsession of the Japanese, who commend its youth-giving and health healing properties. Known as Shin’nooru, it’s so popular that tech companies, including Panasonic, sell machines that allow you to enrich your water with hydrogen at home. A recent Japanese study in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology confirmed what locals had been preaching for years and found that bathing in hydrogen water every day for three months can reduce neck wrinkles. Similarly, a control group of UV-damaged human fibroblasts (the cell responsible for producing collagen in your skin) were shown to increase collagen production twice over after being soaked in hydrogen water for 72 hours.

How hydrogen turns back the clock

“Hydrogen works by positively affecting gene regulation, gene expression, and silencing negative genes,” explains Dr Perricone.  “It’s a very clever molecule because its powerful anti-inflammatory superpowers target and neutralize inflammation-causing  free radicals, which are caused by stress, lack of sleep, pollution and UVA and UVB rays.”

Because hydrogen is the smallest molecule, it easily passes through the cell membrane. So it’s able to wiggle its way into the mitochondria, (the energy centers of a skin cell) and it’s also able to penetrate the nucleus of a cell where the DNA is stored.  Once there, it’s able to neutralize and reduce free radicals linked to ageing.

Hydrogen’s real pièce de résistance is that it is able to up-regulate ‘messenger molecules’, which essentially tell cells to produce hundreds of antioxidant enzymes to counteract free radicals. In layman’s terms, hydrogen encourages your cells to become an antioxidant factory. And unlike vitamin C or other antioxidants, you can’t use them all up because the hydrogen is boosting your skins ability to create new ones.

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN IN WATER IS GREAT FOR SKIN

H2 the revolution of new youth.

The desire to have healthy, elastic, wrinkle-free, and young looking skin dates back to primeval times.1 One of the ways (which is still used today) to try and accomplish this is the ancient practice of bathing in springs and mineral waters.2 However, unlike most conventional practices of lotions, creams, oils, powders and other cosmetics that may not help and/or even have negative side effects,3-10 bathing in specific waters that have reductive characteristics seems to have great therapeutic application.11girlh2One study12 tested a mineral water with reductive characteristics (most likely due to dissolved molecular hydrogen) and a prepared water containing molecular hydrogen. The results revealed that bathing in both of these waters decreased the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of human skin.12 this is an important observation because healthy skin has reductive characteristics, 13 and the ORP of the skin increases by oxidative damage (from sun exposure) and also by aging (as measured by lipid-peroxide levels). 14 This relationship between redox potentials of the skin and aging has been investigated in more detail and shows that reductive waters lower the oxidation of the skin.15, 16

Bathing in hydrogen water not only reduced the ORP of skin, 17 but also improved its elasticity. Moreover, treating bleached hair with this water gave an improvement in fluency and gloss.17

MOLECULAR HYDROGEN & SUNBURNS

One group of researchers18 gave hairless mice sunburns. They bathed one group in tap water and the other in hydrogen water. The skin of the mice bathed in hydrogen water showed significantly lower indices of skin injury and lower inflammatory cytokine levels.18 Another group of researchers performed a similar study19 and found that bathing mice in hydrogen water reduced the level of skin damage, increased activity of the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase, lowered inflammatory cytokines, and prevented ultrastructure changes of the skin, suggesting hydrogen water can protect against UV-induced skin cell damage.19

This was further validated in another article20 where hydrogen water was shown to be very beneficial for UV induced skin cell damage. The study showed that Type-1 collagen was synthesized about two-fold more in the cells treated with hydrogen water. It also prevented DNA damage, cell death, and decreased levels of intracellular free radicals.  The study also reveals that in human subjects, bathing in hydrogen water for three months significantly improved wrinkles in the skin.  The authors concluded that hydrogen water might serve as a daily skin care to repress UVA-induced skin damage by scavenging free radicals and promoting type-1 collagen synthesis.20

Hydrogen water was also seen to prevent arsenic-impaired calcium signaling (which is involved in skin cancer) in keratinocytes (predominate cell type in skin) through both its antioxidant and non-antioxidant cell signaling effects.21 In other words, hydrogen not only exerts protection and benefits on the skin because it’s an antioxidant, 22 but also as a cell signaling molecule.23
